Winter Wonderland: Cappadocia Under Snow

A magical winter story captured among snow-covered fairy chimneys.

Winter Wonderland: Cappadocia Under Snow

It was the last week of January. The forecast showed heavy snowfall, and we asked Elif and Deniz whether they wanted to move their session up by a week. Deniz's answer was short and certain: "We're actually waiting for the snow." That's when we knew this would be no ordinary shoot.

White Silence at Dawn

We met at the top of Goreme at six in the morning. Overnight snow had draped a flawless white blanket over the fairy chimneys. The temperature was minus seven, but the sky was clearing for the first time that day — a pale pink along the horizon, lavender above it, deep blue higher still. When that gradient fell across the snow-covered valley, Elif held her breath. Deniz squeezed her hand. We simply pressed the shutter.

Our first stop was the rocky outcrop at the edge of Love Valley. Normally covered in dry earth and sparse grass, this spot had transformed into an entirely different place under the snow. When the hem of Elif's long burgundy coat touched the white surface, it produced the strongest frame of the morning. Behind them, dozens of fairy chimneys stood in quiet rows, each wearing its own white cap.

Shooting in Falling Snow: Challenges and Surprises

Around eight o'clock, the snow returned — gently at first, then in thick flakes. This might seem like a condition that stops a shoot, but in Cappadocia, snowfall works like a magical filter. Flakes drifting through the air create a natural bokeh effect. We didn't miss that moment. We captured Deniz walking toward Elif with slowly spinning snowflakes around them, adding cinematic depth to the scene.

There were challenges, of course. Battery life drops by half in the cold — we carried spares in our pockets, warmed by body heat. Lens fogging occurred every time we moved between indoors and outdoors. But years of experience have made solving these problems second nature. The real surprise was that the couple never complained about the cold. With the right motivation, even minus ten stops being an obstacle.

Winter shoot tip: Dark-colored clothing creates the best contrast against white backgrounds. Choose burgundy, deep green, and black tones. Light-colored outfits blend into the snow and figures get lost.

In the afternoon, we moved to Uchisar Castle. The castle's rock surface is normally warm earth tones, but under snow it had shifted to a dramatic grey-white palette. We positioned Elif and Deniz on the lower slope of the castle, at a point overlooking the Cappadocia panorama. There were no balloons in the distance, but sunbeams filtering through the clouds drew golden lines across the valley.

The Final Frame and an Unforgettable Detail

The last stop of the session was the old stone houses of Cavusin village. Less snow had fallen here, but the thin layer gathered on rooftops and window ledges gave the village a nostalgic character. Deniz handed Elif a cup of hot salep — this wasn't a planned scene, it was a real moment. After that frame, we lowered the camera. Some moments exist not to be captured, but to be lived.

Over four hours of shooting, we produced 847 frames. The final album consisted of 62 photographs. Elif wrote to us later: "Every time I look at a photo, I feel the cold and the warmth of that morning at the same time." That is exactly what a winter tale should be.

What are the best months for a winter shoot in Cappadocia?

Late December through mid-February offers the highest chance of snow. January typically provides the heaviest snow cover. However, snowfall is never guaranteed — we recommend coming with flexible dates.

What should I wear for a winter session?

A dark-colored long coat or cape, sturdy yet stylish boots, and warm accessories (cashmere scarf, leather gloves) work perfectly for both aesthetics and comfort. Layering is important because you'll warm up as you move.

How long does a winter shoot last?

Our winter sessions typically run 2–3 hours. Warming breaks are included and hot drinks are always on hand. Check our packages for details or get in touch with us.
