Scouting New Locations: Cappadocia's Hidden Spots

Scouting New Locations: Cappadocia's Hidden Spots

When people think of photography in Cappadocia, the same locations come to mind — the balloon field, the Goreme panorama, a few well-known valleys. These locations are certainly magnificent and we use them regularly. But what sets us apart is our commitment to constantly searching for, discovering, and testing new spots. In this article, we share how we find new locations behind the scenes.

Cappadocia is geographically vast — it extends far beyond Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup, with dozens of valleys, hundreds of rock formations, and countless ancient settlements. A large portion of this area lies outside the tourist routes. That is exactly where we go.

How the Scouting Process Works

Discovering a new location usually starts with a lead. Sometimes a local farmer mentions a valley we did not know about. Sometimes we stray from a hiking path and encounter an unexpected view. Sometimes we notice an interesting rock formation while studying satellite maps.

Once we have a lead, the first step is a scouting walk. One or two team members head to the location with a camera and a notebook. During this initial visit, we evaluate:

Light analysis: From what angle and at what time does sunlight hit this spot? Is morning or evening light better? Are there shaded areas? This information determines what type of shoot the location is suited for.

Access and safety: Can we bring our clients here safely? What is the walking difficulty level? Can someone come in heels, or are sneakers required? Is it accessible for elderly or mobility-impaired guests?

Visual potential: Is the background clean? Are there natural framing opportunities? How many different compositions can we achieve from different angles? What do the colors and textures add to a photograph?

Some of our best locations were discovered when we got lost. Once we lost GPS signal and descended into the wrong valley — and found Cappadocia's most impressive natural rock arch. That spot is now one of our most requested shooting locations.

Test Shoots

After a location passes the initial evaluation, we move to the test shoot phase. Using team members as models, we photograph at different hours and in different weather conditions. These test shoots reveal:

How light actually behaves — theory and practice do not always match. Seeing on a map that a spot faces west is one thing; seeing the sun drop behind a rock wall in person is another. Details like wind direction, dust conditions, and noise levels can only be assessed on-site.

We evaluate the test results as a team. If the location delivers sufficient quality, it is added to our shooting routes. Each new location expands the variety of experiences we can offer our clients.

Why We Constantly Seek New Locations

Many couples who visit Cappadocia want the same photographs they have seen on Instagram. We understand this, and we certainly capture those iconic frames. But beyond that, we believe every couple has their own unique story. And telling that story sometimes requires stepping outside the familiar.

One couple loves adventure — we take them to a valley no one knows about. Another couple wants romance — we show them a rock formation beside a hidden rose garden. A couple interested in history — we shoot in front of centuries-old fresco remnants.

Location variety also ensures that couples shooting during the same period have distinctly different photographs. We work to make sure not everyone has the same photo from the same spot at the same angle.

We share our newly discovered locations on our blog. If you want to discover Cappadocia's hidden beauty, get in touch — let us show you a Cappadocia you have never seen.

Can we choose our own shooting location?

Of course. If you have a specific location in mind, we will incorporate it into the plan. We also suggest alternatives that match your style and vision.

How far are the hidden locations from the tourist spots?

Most of our hidden locations are 5-15 minutes from the main tourist points. There is no need to travel to remote, hard-to-reach places — sometimes the most beautiful spot is one that everyone walks past without noticing.

Are the new locations safe?

We visit every new location multiple times before bringing clients and conduct safety assessments. We check access routes, ground conditions, and potential risks.
