Sarah & James: A Balloon Sunrise Story

The unforgettable sunrise story of Sarah and James from London, captured alongside Cappadocia's balloons.

Sarah & James: A Balloon Sunrise Story

Our first contact with Sarah and James came through an email six months before their wedding. It was short and clear: "We want a balloon sunrise. That is our dream." A couple living in London, they had met at university seven years ago. They had never seen Cappadocia before, but a single photograph of the balloon landscape was enough to bring them here.

We scheduled the shoot for mid-May — the period when balloons fly most consistently. The night before, James sent a message: "Sarah is too excited to sleep." I smiled. We had witnessed this excitement hundreds of times, but we felt it fresh every time.

A Day That Begins in Darkness

We met in the hotel lobby at 04:30. The sky was still dark, stars still visible. Sarah had thrown James's jacket over her red dress — the morning air was cool. They were both quiet, a mixture of sleepiness and anticipation.

When we arrived at the balloon field, the eastern edge of the sky had just begun to lighten. A thin orange line appeared on the horizon. The balloons were still being prepared on the ground — enormous fabrics spread across the earth, burners firing intermittently. This scene alone was a photo story in itself.

We took the first frames during this preparation. Sarah was watching the balloons inflate while James touched her shoulder. That moment of contact — unplanned, undirected, completely natural — became one of the most intimate frames of the session.

When the Balloons Rose

As the first rays of sunlight filtered over the valley, the balloons began to lift one by one. First one, then three, then ten, then more than you could count. The sky filled with colored dots — red, blue, yellow, green. And beneath all those colors, Cappadocia's fairy chimneys shimmered in golden light.

I will never forget the expression on Sarah's face. Her eyes had filled with tears. She turned to James and hugged him without saying a word. We pressed the shutter. That moment — balloons filling the sky, morning light painting everything gold, two people holding each other tightly — produced one of the most beautiful frames of my career.

Over the next 45 minutes, we shot at different points. On hilltops, between rocks, at the valley's edge. As balloons passed overhead, the sound of their burners mixed with the wind. At one point Sarah laughed and asked, "Is this real?" James laughed too and said, "I think we are dreaming." They repeated this exchange several times throughout the shoot.

Something James said after the session has stayed with me: "We have been together seven years, but today I looked at Sarah the way I did the very first time." Perhaps this is the gift Cappadocia gives people — the chance to see someone you know through new eyes.

After Sunrise

After the balloons had risen and the light climbed higher, we moved the session to the valleys. We took the final frames at a quiet spot near the entrance to Pigeon Valley. The morning's energy had given way to a calm peace. Sarah and James had completely forgotten about the camera — they were walking, talking, laughing. We shot from a distance.

After the session, we had breakfast together. Sarah asked when they could see the photographs. James said, "Whatever the photos look like, I will never forget this morning for the rest of my life." That sentence was one of those moments that reminds us why what we do matters.

Sarah and James's session was a full version of our balloon sunrise experience. If you want to live a similar story, reach out to us — let us plan together. Every couple is unique and every story is written differently, but Cappadocia adds the same magic to all of them.

What time do you wake up for a balloon sunrise shoot?

It varies by season, but we typically meet between 04:00 and 05:00. We need to be on location before sunrise. Balloons launch with the sun.

Do balloons fly every day?

Balloons depend on wind and weather conditions. They fly for most of the year in Cappadocia but can be canceled on some days. In case of cancellation, we implement an alternative sunrise shoot plan.

How long does the shoot last?

A balloon sunrise session typically lasts 1.5-2 hours. If you would like to extend the shoot and continue to different locations, check our packages for options.
