Tips for capturing impressive photos among the mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys.

Pasabag Fairy Chimneys Photography Guide

Pasabag: Nature's Most Extraordinary Studio

Cappadocia has many unique locations, but Pasabag is the most dramatic of them all. The mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys — a wide cap perched on a slender stem — rise like natural sculptures created by millions of years of volcanic erosion. These formations are found nowhere else in the world in this concentration and at this scale.

For photographers, Pasabag is a true paradise. Every angle offers a different composition, every hour brings different light, every season creates a different atmosphere. Whether you want portraits, landscapes, or dramatic silhouettes — there is a corner here for every style. Over the years, we have shot hundreds of sessions at Pasabag, and every time we discover a new perspective.

Pasabag is located approximately 5 kilometers north of Goreme, along the road to Avanos. It is organized as an open-air museum with an entrance fee. The area is relatively flat, making it easy to walk — you can even shoot in heels, though comfortable shoes are always better.

The biggest mistake at Pasabag is shooting from the same spot where everyone takes their photos. A few steps to the side, a few steps forward — and an entirely different world opens up.

Best Spots and Techniques for Shooting

The Triple Fairy Chimneys: The most iconic spot in the area features three large fairy chimneys rising side by side. This is ideal for a classic frame — but during busy hours, you may need to wait your turn. If you arrive early in the morning, you will find the area nearly empty.

The Monk Cells: Historic monk cells carved into the fairy chimneys are perfect for adding depth and mystery. The contrast between the dark interior and the bright landscape outside creates dramatic frames. Portraits framed by small windows are particularly striking.

Background Depth: Placing the fairy chimneys in the background while positioning the subject in the foreground creates a sense of depth. Longer focal lengths (85mm-135mm) are ideal for this — the background softens into a beautiful blur while the fairy chimneys remain recognizable. Our photographer uses this technique masterfully.

Shadow Play: During morning and evening hours, the fairy chimneys cast long shadows. Incorporating these shadows into the composition adds a dramatic dimension to photographs. If you are considering black-and-white conversion, Pasabag's shadow play produces extraordinary results.

Practical Information and Recommendations

The best light at Pasabag falls during the first two hours after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. At midday, the overhead sun creates harsh shadows — not ideal for portraits, though usable for dramatic landscape shots.

For outfit choices, light colors and solid tones create a beautiful contrast with the caramel-beige tones of the fairy chimneys. Warm colors like red, burgundy, and orange also harmonize with Cappadocia's earth palette. Avoid clothing with busy patterns — they can be distracting.

In our full-day packages, Pasabag is typically included in the route plan and visited alongside other locations. You can combine multiple experiences in a single session, complementing Pasabag with valleys and balloon views. Write to us to build your shoot plan.

Is there an entrance fee for Pasabag?

Yes, Pasabag is organized as an open-air museum area with a nominal entrance fee. Museum passes are valid.

How long do you shoot at Pasabag?

We typically shoot for 30-60 minutes. In full-day sessions, it is planned alongside other locations.

Does the area get crowded?

Tourist groups can be heavy during the day. Early morning (at opening) or close to closing time allows for quieter shooting.

Can I walk in heels?

The area is relatively flat but the ground is stony. Short periods in heels for photos are fine, but bring comfortable shoes as well.
