How to Prepare for a Sunrise Shoot

Everything you need to do the night before for a shoot starting at 4:30 AM.

How to Prepare for a Sunrise Shoot

The Night Before: Essential Preparations

A sunrise shoot means capturing one of Cappadocia's most magical moments. You will set out while the sky is still dark and stand before the camera as the first light breaks. To experience this at its finest, you need to complete your preparations the evening before.

Lay out your outfit in advance. You do not want to be standing in front of your wardrobe at 4:00 AM second-guessing yourself. Hang your chosen outfit, place your accessories beside it, and do not forget your shoes — bring a comfortable pair that can handle Cappadocia's rocky terrain. If you have a flying dress experience planned, our team will bring the dress to the shoot location for you.

Go to bed early. It sounds simple, but it is the most neglected step. Do not leave dinner too late, avoid caffeine, and check your alarm at least twice. We typically meet around 4:30 AM for sunrise shoots — which means you need to be awake by 3:45 at the latest.

Pro tip: Ask your hotel reception to prepare a coffee thermos and a simple breakfast pack for early morning. Most boutique hotels are used to this request and will happily arrange it.

Morning Routine: Simple and Quick

When you wake up, avoid getting into an extended preparation routine. Complete your makeup the night before if possible, or keep it minimal — the soft light of sunrise will naturally enhance your features. Apply the hairstyle you decided on beforehand. Avoid anything too elaborate; wind is an inseparable part of Cappadocia, and some of the most beautiful frames happen when your hair flows naturally.

Pack a small bag with essentials the night before: lip balm, hair tie, small mirror, charged phone, and water. Mornings can be cool in Cappadocia, so bring a light cardigan or wrap that you can remove once the shoot begins.

At the Shoot Location: The First Minutes

When you arrive at the meeting point, your photographer will greet you and determine the first position based on the light conditions. During sunrise shoots, we are working against time — the golden hour lasts roughly 20 to 30 minutes. This is why quick adaptation matters.

Do not stress. Be natural. The best frames come from moments when you feel relaxed. Your photographer will guide you, helping you find the right angle and pose. If you have chosen a shoot package, all logistics will have been planned in advance.

A sunrise shoot is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and every one is different. Sometimes the balloons fill the sky, sometimes mist blankets the valleys, sometimes the sky turns the purest shades of orange and pink. Each is unique, and each is unforgettable.

What time does a sunrise shoot start?

It varies by season, but we typically meet between 4:30 and 5:30 AM. The exact time is confirmed the day before the shoot.

What if the morning is cold?

Early mornings in Cappadocia can drop to 10-15°C (50-59°F). Bring a light layer that you can remove once the shoot starts.

Should I do my makeup beforehand?

Yes, we recommend completing your makeup at the hotel. You can also request our professional makeup service — a makeup artist will pick you up from your hotel.

Should I skip breakfast?

We recommend having something light. After the shoot, you can reward yourself with breakfast at one of Cappadocia's beautiful cafes.
