Hot Air Balloon Photo Locations
A detailed map of locations where you can photograph balloons from the best angles.
When you think of Cappadocia, the first image is unmistakable: dozens of colorful hot air balloons drifting across the sky. Photographing this scene at its best requires being in the right place at the right time. As a team that has been shooting alongside these balloons every morning for years, we share the best locations and the unique advantages each one offers.
The Best Balloon Photography Spots
1. Goreme Panorama Point
Cappadocia's most classic and most popular spot. You can see the entire valley and the balloon ascent in a wide frame. The combination of golden light and balloons at sunrise reaches its most dramatic expression here. Access is easy — a 10-15 minute walk from Goreme center. You can check our Goreme panorama guide for more details.
2. Uchisar Castle and Surroundings
As Cappadocia's highest point, Uchisar offers a different perspective on the balloons. The balloons may be at your level or even below you — creating a rare compositional opportunity. The terraces and cave hotels around the castle also provide excellent shooting positions.
3. Red Valley (Kizilcukur) Entrance
The hills at the entrance to the valley produce frames that combine the natural frame of red rocks with the balloons. At sunrise, the red rocks gleam with golden light while balloons create a color spectacle in the sky. This spot is less crowded and offers a more intimate shooting environment.
4. Pigeon Valley Hilltop
Located between Uchisar and Goreme, this valley allows you to frame the balloons together with greenery and fairy chimneys. Especially in spring when flowers bloom, balloon frames combined with foreground details achieve extraordinary beauty.
5. Love Valley Entrance
Famous for its towering fairy chimneys, the entrance to this valley offers a unique vantage point that frames balloons against dramatic rock formations. Known as a "hidden" spot among photographers, it has gained popularity in recent years but remains far quieter than the Goreme panorama.
Timing and Technical Recommendations
In balloon photography, timing is everything. Balloons typically begin ascending 15-20 minutes before sunrise. This means you need to be positioned at your chosen spot at least 30-40 minutes beforehand. Sunrise time varies by season — around 7:00-7:30 AM in winter months and 5:00-5:30 AM in summer.
Technically, we recommend carrying both a wide-angle (24-35mm) and a telephoto lens (70-200mm). The wide-angle captures the full scope of the landscape while the telephoto magnifies the balloons and reveals their details. Using balloons as a bokeh effect in the background during portrait sessions produces exceptionally romantic frames.
Professional tip: The most balloon-dense moment and the most photogenic moment can be different. When balloons are still low (the first 5-10 minutes of ascent), they appear close to the valley and large — ideal for portrait backgrounds. Once fully ascended, they become scattered dots across the sky and work beautifully for minimalist landscape frames.
Which Season, Which Spot?
Each season has its own favorite location. In spring, Pigeon Valley (flowers plus balloons); in summer, Goreme panorama (clear skies plus dense balloon traffic); in autumn, Red Valley (golden leaves plus red rocks); in winter, Uchisar (snow-covered landscape plus balloons) — each delivers the most striking results.

Do balloons fly in every season?
Yes, balloons fly year-round. However, the cancellation rate is higher during winter months due to weather conditions. The most reliable period is April through November.
What is the best lens for balloon photography?
We recommend using both a wide-angle (24-35mm) and a telephoto lens (70-200mm). Ideally, working with two bodies eliminates lens-change downtime.
Do you need to ride a balloon to photograph them?
No, the most impressive balloon photographs are taken from the ground. The view of balloons drifting across the sky appears far more dramatic from below than from above. That said, panoramic shots from inside a balloon basket are a separate experience worth having.
