Goreme Panorama: The Sunrise Shooting Spot
Everything you need to know about the Goreme panorama point offering Cappadocia's most iconic view.
Cappadocia offers dozens of incredible photography spots, but if you had to choose just one, it would most likely be the Goreme panorama point. Every morning at sunrise, the sight of hundreds of hot air balloons slowly ascending creates one of the most photographed views in the world. At Cappadocia Studio, we have visited this spot hundreds of times and encountered a different light, a different atmosphere on each occasion.
Where Is It and How to Get There?
The Goreme panorama point is located on the ridge southwest of Goreme town, directly across from the hill also known as Sunset Point. Walking from the town center takes approximately 10-15 minutes. The path is unpaved, so we recommend comfortable shoes — especially if you will be walking in the dark, a flashlight or phone light is helpful.
If arriving by car, there is limited parking near the hilltop. During peak season (May through October), arriving early is important — both to secure the best position and to find parking. We typically aim to be there 40-45 minutes before sunrise.
Sunrise Photography Guide
Shooting sunrise at the Goreme panorama has its own distinct rhythm. When the first light begins to appear above the valley, the balloons are still being inflated on the ground. During this window, blue hour frames are captured — the sky is deep blue and the valley silhouettes are dramatic.
Once the balloons start ascending, everything accelerates. As the sky shifts to orange and pink tones, colorful balloons begin to fill your frame. This moment typically lasts 15-20 minutes and offers the most concentrated photography opportunity. The light changes constantly — every minute brings a different frame.
Approximately 30 minutes after sunrise, the balloons have climbed higher and the light has turned harsher. At this point most photographers finish, but we think differently: when the balloons become small dots above the valley, a perfect opportunity emerges for minimalist and wide-angle frames.
An insider tip: Position yourself not at the center of the Goreme panorama point but slightly to the right (southeast). From here you can see both the entire Goreme valley and Uchisar Castle in the background. This angle lets you capture the balloons in a more dramatic composition.
Seasonal Differences
Spring (April-May): Balloons combined with green valleys and wildflowers. Sunrise around 5:30-6:00 AM.
Summer (June-August): Early sunrise (around 5:00 AM) and warm tones. Can be crowded.
Autumn (September-November): Golden leaves and soft light. Our favorite period — the light quality is extraordinary.
Winter (December-March): Balloons against snow-covered fairy chimneys. Sunrise is later (7:00-7:30 AM) so you can prepare more comfortably. Balloon flights may be cancelled depending on weather conditions.

Do balloons fly every day?
No. Balloon flights depend on weather conditions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation makes the decision early each morning. Flights may be cancelled due to wind, fog, or rain. Flight probability is higher during summer months.
Is there an entrance fee for the Goreme panorama?
No, the spot is public and free of charge. However, some private terraces and cafes may offer paid seating areas.
What is the best time for a sunrise shoot?
It varies by season, but the general rule is to be there 30-40 minutes before sunrise. We plan your session schedule according to the season and guide you to be there at exactly the right time.
