Behind the Scenes: Balloon Shoot
What happens behind the scenes of a balloon shoot that starts at 4 AM?
Behind those magical balloon photographs you see on Instagram, there are alarms going off at 4 AM, preparations made in darkness, and a meticulously planned process. In this article, we walk you through what actually happens behind the scenes of a balloon sunrise shoot — realistic, unfiltered, as it is.
From Midnight to Dawn: The Preparation
The shoot day actually begins the evening before. In the late hours, we check weather conditions, balloon flight approvals, and wind forecasts. Balloons do not fly every day in Cappadocia — the Directorate General of Civil Aviation grants flight permission based on wind speed. This uncertainty is the most critical part of our work.
Once flight approval comes through, we wake up between 3:30 and 4:00 AM. Our equipment has been prepared the night before: two camera bodies, three lenses, spare batteries, a reflector, and portable lighting. Although we have scouted the location beforehand, we also plan alternative angles because every morning's light is different.
Our recommendation for guests: Choose simple but elegant outfits on shoot day. Mornings can be cool — a shawl or jacket that you can drape over your shoulders is both practical and photographs beautifully. We suggest having your hair and makeup done the night before or booking a very early appointment.
The Magic Hour: The Shoot Itself
We arrive at the location approximately 30 minutes before sunrise. The balloons are still being prepared on the ground, their flames glowing orange against the darkness. Even these moments are wonderful for photography — most photographers miss this frame, we do not.
When the balloons begin to rise, we have a window of roughly 20 to 25 minutes. During this time, there are dozens, sometimes over a hundred balloons in the sky. The light changes constantly — from cold blue to warm gold, then to pink tones. Every minute is a different painting. This is why we need to work quickly but calmly.
The biggest secret in balloon shoots: choosing the right location. We have special spots that most visitors do not know about, offering both balloon and valley views in the background. We have been discovering and testing these spots for years — each one offers a different composition.
During the shoot, we give minimal direction to our guests. Instead of "look over there," we offer prompts that create natural interaction — "turn to each other and share a memory from your last vacation." The result: genuine smiles, genuine gazes, genuine moments.
Post-Shoot: Editing and Delivery
After the shoot wraps, the real work begins. A balloon session typically produces 400 to 600 frames. From these, we select the strongest 80 to 120. Each photograph is individually edited — color correction, light balancing, tone harmony. But we never over-retouch. Our goal is for the photos to look natural, not like they came out of a magazine.
After morning sessions, we usually send 3 to 5 quickly edited photos for your social media that same day. The complete gallery is delivered within 7 to 10 business days.

What happens if the balloons do not fly?
If balloon flights are cancelled, we can reschedule the shoot to the next day. If you do not have remaining days, a sunrise shoot without balloons is still incredibly beautiful in Cappadocia — the valleys, light, and scenery are more than enough.
What time do I need to be ready for the shoot?
It varies by season, but generally we pick you up from your hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. In summer months, it can be slightly earlier.
Which packages include the balloon shoot?
Our Sunrise package is specifically designed for balloon sunrise sessions. Check our packages page for details.
Can I get balloon photos without riding in a balloon?
Yes, you do not ride in a balloon during our shoots. We use the balloons as a backdrop — this way we capture both you and the balloons in the same frame.
